The city of Burgos lies approximately 130Km inland from the Cantabrian coastline, on a plateau 860m (2800ft) above sea level.
It lies in an area where some of the earliest evidence of human life has been found (at the Atapuerta archaeological site) but is more famous now for its magnificent Gothic cathedral built in the 13th to 16th centuries.
There are also many other buildings of interest in this city which at one time was the capital of Castille, and is a major stopping point for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.
