The city of Santa Cruz is the capital of Tenerife and also the capital of the Canary Islands (jointly with Las Palmas on Gran Canaria).
The city has been built around the busy harbour, an important link for passengers and cargo between the island, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The strategic location Santa Cruz has resulted more than one battle there, one of which being where Lord Nelson lost an arm in 1797.

Santa Cruz is mostly a modern city, having wide tree lined avenues, spacious parks and squares. It is also a commercial centre and has large shops and shopping malls.

The nearby beaches have imported golden sand covering the normal grey coloured organic sand of Tenerife.
