Roquetas de Mar lies on a peninsular reaching south into the Mediterranean (giving it one of the best climates in Spain)just west of Almeria city and is one of the main tourist destinations of the Costa de Almeria.
The area was originally an important area for the the production of vegetables in greenhouses but this has given way to hotels etc making use of the wide sandy beaches.
Some of the developments have been high-rise but has a feeling of openness to it and there is an 18 hole golf course at Playa Serena
5Km south west of Roquetas are the Las Marinas salt marshes which attract large numbers of birds including flamingos, little egrets, and avocets.
The Sierra Nevada and Alpujarras are within driving distance.
